History

Somerville Family Practice opened in 1979, at a time when there were few doctors in the densely populated city of Somerville. Over the previous few years many of the city’s general practitioners had retired, leaving the population with a scarcity of local medical care. Owing to this shortage of physicians, the U. S. Public Health Service recruited Dr. Martin, awarding him a grant to establish the office and help support him during the first three years. At the end of that time, the practice was thriving and became private, fully owned by Dr. Martin, as it still is.

He was the sole doctor in the office until 1996 when Leora Fishman M.D., joined him as his associate. As the practice expanded, so did the medical staff, which now includes two nurse practitioners and one physician assistant. Everything that happens in the office is supported by our great front-desk staff and medical assistants. Our invaluable nurse practice manager, Nancy Landry, R.N., has been with the practice since 1992.
